Flying: A Massive Pain in My Ear

Flying used to be a pain in my ear.

I am one of those very lucky people who suffer from ear pain when flying.

The pain is incredible and the pressure is so bad that I am left shaken and close to tears when I disembark from the flight. Thankfully, take off and the actual flight doesn’t really affect me, but the decent? Boy of boy. I honestly think the pain is akin to child birth. My jaw goes ridged from the pain which spreads from my nose to my ears and my ears feel like they are going to blow off. The pressure is incredible.

After a flight I am often left partially deft – it is like I am wearing headphones so it is impossible to hear things clearly – and this can last for days.

I have visited countless doctors about this. Some have suggested having my nose fixed (I’ve broken it twice. Luckily to look at it is fairly straight, but the inside is a mess), but they have also warned me that it is expensive, painful and probably won’t fix the problem. I’ve tried chewing gum, yawning, pinching my nose and blowing, and ear plugs. Nothing worked.

Then a friend recommended antihistamine nose spray. Oh. My. God. I imagine this is how everyone else flies. My ears sill fill with pressure, but then they pop and equilibralize like everyone else. Finally, after countless painful flights and doctors visits, I can fly pain free. Who knew $6 could buy me a pain free flight and I’d be able to hear when I disembarked?

I too suffered from ear pain on descent, which is called barotrauma, and too tried the same things you did.The only difference is I hate spraying anything up my nose especially a drug such as Neosynephrine or Afrin due to possible side effects for people with high blood pressure, along with the fact that many people suffer from addiction from these two. I finally found a new all natural product online CAPTAINEDSEARQUALIZER.COM. They are specialized towelettes to be inhaled and open up the eustachean tubes, relieving ear pain. They’re only about $5, and really work.
